Respiratory Medicine Department – ventilator and CO monitors

The Trust’s Respiratory Medicine Department provides respiratory care for a wide range of chest and lung conditions. In 2016/17, WUTH Charity’s respiratory funds benefitted from a significant donation, which was promptly spent on respiratory equipment, including a ventilator (shown below), associated equipment and a number of carbon monoxide (CO) monitors for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Anne McGinnity (former Divisional Manager, Medicine) said:

“This ventilator is a lifesaving piece of equipment that supports a patient’s breathing without the need for intubation or tracheostomy. This new machine is a reliable and more effective treatment for patients, resulting in reduced length of stay.

“The CO monitors are a diagnostic tool to support patients in the COPD clinics. They are used by the Physiologists to measure patients’ respiratory function to allow early definitive diagnosis and therefore effective treatment. These machines are recommended in national guidelines, and we’re very pleased that they are now available at four of the Trust’s clinic sites.”
